Cesium
There has been a lot of talk about Cesium, following the accident at Fukushima, and although most of the members here are well versed on Cesium, I found this two page summary of "What is Cesium and why is it bad" that I thought might be interesting to some.

Re: Environmentalists for Nuclear
I don't know how much sense that would make. Extreme organizations, on either side of the issue, are doing more harm than good.GradPhys wrote:It may be a good idea to join the organization, to promote environmentally friendly Nuclear Power.

Re: Germany Restarts Reactors...
Yeah, it's really interesting how governments can make all these grandiose decisions and announce how they will do this or that until the %$#$ hits the fan and the quickly change their decisions. I love it :-) It would be interesting to find out if this was just a temporary thing, or if the German g...

Re: Risk perception and energy infrastructure
I liked professor Allison's paper. I haven't read his book, but I did get the book's conclusions that he references in the paper and have attached it below for everyone here. He makes a lot of good points and I think he talks to the points of the "other" paper that I like by the "Pare...

Re: Risk perception and energy infrastructure
Impressive list of papers, Kimchin. I haven't read all of them, yet, but I like the fact that they come from such varied sources. And, I think papers and analyses of this type are very important, because most of us don't really have a good handle on risk. We all have our own perspectives on it and t...

Re: Formulas for Cylindrical Source
Rockwell's shielding manual will probably have those equations, too, but I agree that these questions are probably better asked in some general, public physics newsgroup.emilygrafton wrote:Schaffer's Shielding Compendium Book would probably have all the formulas you are looking for.

Are SMRs the way of the future?
Does anyone in this forum think that SMRs are the way of the future? I mean, I understand the theory behind it and all, but I am not sure that the economics of it will ever work out. I thought one of the reasons *big* nukes were desirable, was the economy of scales, i.e., the large energy output wou...

Re: Alternative/Green Energy
Fedya, KimChin are you guys serious? So, what about the thousands of tons of radioactive material that is the byproduct of the process? How do you deal with it without "impacting" the environment? I am not a nuclear option opponent, but I mean come on, we have to call things by their name...

New ASEASY Users?
I know that some of us die-hearts still use aseasy for win, but I always wondered if any new computer users even know what it is! I think they should probably teach some intro courses in college (or even high school) on aseasy and other "basic" programs, so that kids that finish school tod...

Re: Alternative/Green Energy
I know what it means, I was being coy because a lot of people and companies use the term lightly, simply to make themselves sound important and "cool". I guess the levity was lost in the translation :-( I understand, Johannes. However, I still haven't gotten an answer to my original quest...
